MX Championships return to the Coast

NATIONAL MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO COAST PROVINCE AFTER 15 YEARS

The National Motocross Championships, a popular racing series that began in the 1950s, are primarily held in Nairobi or up-country but with the launch of a 2-kilometre dirt track at Vipingo Ridge, they are returning to the Coast Province for the first time since 2007. The MX track in Kilifi County is an exciting new addition to the country’s off-road racing circuits having qualified to host a race sanctioned by the Motorcycle Sports Federation of Kenya (MSFK).

On 8th and 9th October 2022, Round 8 of the National MX Championships will be held at the Vipingo Ridge racetrack and supported by Inchcape Kenya, Off Road Adventures, Total Energies, Capital FM, Collective Energy Africa, Mombasa Cement and Superior Homes among other sponsors. The race is deemed a significant step in creating nationwide participation for the sport.

It is estimated that up to 70 riders will participate in the two-day event and over 500 spectators will watch the action from the sidelines. With impressive jumps and a myriad of twists and turns, the track promises to wow the crowd as riders young and old, from Peewee to Master class, take on its challenge.

Torben Rune, former National MX Champion and resident at Vipingo Ridge, explains the construction of the track on the estate: “We built the track in 2021 and inaugurated it with a fun race that was a great success. We are looking forward to hosting the National Motocross Championships for the first time. It is our hope that new tracks like this across the country will help grow Motocross in Kenya and bring its excitement to an even bigger audience.”

Julie Wahome, Chair of the MSFK Motorcycle Commission, added:

“The Motorcycle Sports Federation of Kenya is delighted to welcome this new venue to the official racing circuit having held a candidate event at the same track in December 2021, and appreciates the partnership and support of Vipingo Ridge in their contribution towards the growth and development of motorcycling sport.”

Vipingo MX is a new sub-brand of the wider Vipingo Ridge name and brings with it the same prestige, adventure and family-fun that the master brand is so renowned for. Vipingo Ridge welcomes all spectators to the event at the weekend and entrance charges are Ksh 300 for adults and Ksh 150. With entertainment, vendor stands and refreshments on sale, it is expected to be a popular outing on the coastal calendar.
