This World Environment Day is the biggest in the UN Environmental Programme calendar.
The theme and focus in 2025 is ending plastic pollution globally:
“Ridding the planet of plastic pollution is an important contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including those on climate action, sustainable production and consumption, protection of seas and oceans and repairing ecosystems and retaining biodiversity.”
Looking within: Team Sensitisation and Training
On 1st June, one of the key activities at the Vipingo Ridge Beach Club for World Reef Day is a beach clean-up, with the collected waste going to our community partners, women’s Community Based Organisation (CBO) ‘Trash for Cash’ project, who will take the waste and sell it and repurpose and recycle the products.
In May 2025 Vipingo Ridge was awarded a gold rating by eco-tourism Kenya for our work combining tourism, conservation and communities. We are proud to have a high score in the audit, but we also received points to work on.
This World Environment Day we will be working with our teams to reinforce our waste identification, sorting and disposal programmes.
Waste minimisation, correct segmentation and understanding the importance of the role of every team member in managing our waste footprint will be the core topics at the training course for World Environment Day - with a particular focus on plastics in line with the global theme.
This activity is part of our series of conservation activities for a variety of stakeholders.
Bonus Event with Kilifi County and CBO Kilifi Innovation Hub
As well as our team training activities from 3rd to 5th June 2025, in partnership with the Kilifi County Government, our Vipingo Ridge Conservation leadership team will join a door-to-door sensitization campaign on 4th June in Kilifi Town CBD, led collaboratively by the Kilifi Innovation Hub, Department of Environment, and Kilifi Municipality.
This grassroots effort will focus on waste segregation, tree planting, and the promotion of eco-smart waste zones all vital steps in advancing climate action locally.
