Kilifi welcomes Skyward Airlines to Vipingo Ridge

In a significant move set to reshape the travel landscape of Kenya’s coastal region, Skyward Airlines successfully launched its inaugural direct flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Vipingo Ridge Airstrip last Friday.

The event marked not just a new route, but a strategic partnership aimed at unlocking the immense tourism and investment potential of Kilifi County and the broader North Coast.

The inaugural flight departed on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 2:30 pm, with the ceremonial boarding call made by Hon. Lady Justice Njoki Susanna Ndung’u, a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya

The ceremony at Wilson Airport was attended by key stakeholders from the aviation and tourism sectors.

Madam Selina Gor, the Regional Airport Manager at the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), graced the occasion and welcomed the milestone, emphasizing its alignment with KAA’s broader vision: "We encourage more airlines to explore new destinations," she stated "Access drives convenience, business growth, and economic development." Her remarks underscored the authority's commitment to continuous investment in infrastructure that enables airline expansion and stimulates economic activity across the country.

We had a full flight for this inaugural journey to Vipingo Ridge and as well as speeches and press briefings, there was cake cutting and a red carpet to welcome guests on this first journey.

Karibu Kilifi - Governmental Support at Vipingo Ridge

A second, equally significant reception took place at the Vipingo Ridge Airstrip, bringing together county leadership, diplomatic representatives, and tourism stakeholders to welcome the inaugural flight.

Among the notable figures present was the Deputy Governor of Kilifi County HE Flora Mbetsa Chibule, our Chief Guest, alongside other senior government officials including Hon Raymond Ngala, CECM Trade, Tourism and Cooperative Development, Mr. Herbert Mwachiro, the Chief Officer for Tourism Promotion, Culture, and Heritage, represented the county's commitment to leveraging this new connectivity for local economic growth.

Adding a diplomatic dimension to the occasion was Amb. Herbert Kiguli, the Consulate General of the Republic of Uganda in Mombasa, whose presence underscored the broader regional interest in enhanced connectivity and cross-border tourism opportunities. Their collective presence highlighted the strategic importance of the route not only to Kilifi County but to the entire East African region, and reinforced the Uganda-Kenya Coast partnership.

A New Era of Connectivity

The new route, which will operate twice weekly on Fridays and Sundays, significantly slashes travel time to the North Coast. What was once an arduous eight-hour road trip or a flight to Mombasa followed by a long transfer is now a seamless 90-minute journey.

Diana Nyambura, CEO of Skyward Airlines, highlighted that this route is a cornerstone of the airline's strategy to expand its network based on customer demand and regional growth. "This partnership goes beyond launching a new destination; it is about reshaping how travellers access the North Coast," said Ms. Nyambura. She further explained that Vipingo Ridge’s strategically positioned airstrip allows the airline to serve both an exclusive residential community and the wider coastal ecosystem, providing faster access to key destinations like Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi, and Shanzu.

 A Premier Destination Unlocked

Vipingo Ridge is already established as one of Kenya’s premier luxury lifestyle and conservation destinations.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, it boasts an 18-hole PGA-accredited championship golf course the only one of its kind in Africa luxury villas, and a 2,000-acre wildlife sanctuary. Alex Horsey, CEO of Vipingo Ridge, expressed immense enthusiasm for the new air link, framing it as a transformative development for the region. "This inaugural flight is not just about connectivity; it is about creating opportunities for Kilifi County," said Mr. Horsey. "Improved access means more tourism, new investment, and stronger support for local businesses. It also enables us to host international conferences and sporting events with ease".

The improved accessibility supports Vipingo Ridge’s growing reputation as a conference and business venue of choice, alongside our golfing and activity programmes, such as our 2026 sports calendar, including trail runs and a duathlon, all of which stand to benefit from increased participation from Nairobi and beyond.

Economic and Tourism Ripple Effects for Kilifi and the Coast

The launch of this direct flight is widely seen as a strategic move with far-reaching implications for the entire coastal region. There were over a hundred attendees from various sectors, supporting this improvement to infrastructure in Kilifi. By providing a faster, more comfortable gateway, the route is expected to:

Boost Domestic and International Tourism: The convenience of direct access is likely to attract more weekend travellers, golfers, and holidaymakers from Nairobi, while also making it easier for international tourists to combine a safari with a coastal getaway without the logistical hassle.

Stimulate Local Enterprises: With increased visitor numbers, local businesses, including boutique hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and artisan markets in Kilifi, Watamu, and Malindi, are poised to benefit from higher spending.

Attract Investment: Improved infrastructure and accessibility are key drivers for investment. As Mr. Horsey noted, the flight makes it easier to showcase the region to potential investors and supports residential developments by reducing travel time and enhancing convenience for homeowners.

Position Kilifi as a Hub for MICE Tourism: The ability to host international conferences and large-scale sporting events with greater ease will help position Kilifi County as a competitive destination for the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

A Curated Travel Experience and the Path Forward

As Kenya's tourism sector continues its post-pandemic upswing, with international arrivals hitting record numbers, the demand for experiential travel is at an all-time high.

The partnership between Skyward Airlines and Vipingo Ridge is a direct response to this demand, bridging the gap between the capital and the North Coast. By doing so, it is not only opening up a world-class destination but also laying the groundwork for sustainable economic development, job creation, and a brighter future for Kilifi County and the entire coastal region.
