October is globally recognised as a month for raising awareness related to cancer, providing an important opportunity to encourage conversations about prevention, early detection and access to screening services.
Promoting Health and Wellbeing Through Cancer Awareness at Vipingo Ridge
At Vipingo Ridge, this awareness extended beyond the calendar to become a practical team wellbeing initiative. Employees from across the organization came together for an optional cancer awareness session conducted by Mephi Hospital, bringing together 43 staff members representing various departments across Vipingo Ridge.
The session covered breast, cervical and prostate cancer, with discussions focusing on risk factors, warning signs and symptoms, prevention, early detection and the importance of regular screening. By bringing these conversations into the workplace, the session provided employees with an opportunity to access reliable information and better understand the importance of taking proactive steps towards their health.
Following the awareness session, Mephi Hospital also provided cancer screening services for female employees. Female employees took the opportunity to undergo screening, for both cervical and breast cancer highlighting the practical value of combining awareness with access to preventive health services.
The initiative continued as Mephi Hospital conducted optional Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing for male employees. Employees attended and underwent testing, with results communicated directly to the respective participants by the medical team. Confidentiality is of course paramount as the team were able to sensitively engage with Mephi Hospital medical experts.
Putting People at the Heart of Hospitality
For a hospitality organisation such as Vipingo Ridge, creating memorable experiences for guests begins with the people who deliver them. Our team are central to every aspect of the guest experience, from hospitality and food and beverage to golf, security, conservation, maintenance and administration.
Investing in employee wellbeing therefore forms an important part of creating a healthy and supportive working environment. Initiatives such as the cancer awareness and free health screening sessions provide employees with knowledge and access to services that can encourage early detection and more informed health decisions.
The initiative also reflects a broader understanding of what responsible hospitality can look like. Hospitality is not only about the destinations, facilities and experiences offered to guests; it is also about the people behind those experiences and the environment in which they work.
By bringing together staff from different departments for health education and screening, Vipingo Ridge continues to strengthen a culture where employee wellbeing is recognized as an important part of the company.
A Practical Approach to Employee Wellbeing
The cancer awareness programme demonstrates the value of turning awareness into action. Providing information is an important first step, but creating opportunities for employees to access screening services makes the initiative more meaningful.
As Vipingo Ridge continues to grow as a lifestyle and hospitality destination on the Kenyan coast, initiatives that support the wellbeing of its people complement its wider approach to responsible business. From conservation and community engagement to employee development and workplace wellbeing, these efforts contribute to an organization that seeks to create positive value for the people connected to it.
The October cancer awareness and screening sessions are one example of this approach bringing together education, prevention and access to health services while reinforcing the importance of looking after the people who help make the Vipingo Ridge experience possible.
