Strengthening Community Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

Through our Space to Thrive programme, we work hand in hand with neighboring communities to create opportunities that improve livelihoods, strengthen local partnerships, and safeguard the environment for future generations.
As part of this commitment, Vipingo Ridge recently welcomed 13 village elders, alongside the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the Chief, Junju Location, Assistant Chief Kuruwitu, the Chairman of the Chonyi Council of Elders, and the Chairman of the Mtwapa Municipality for a Community Leaders Conservation Awareness and Appreciation Forum.
The forum served as a platform to celebrate the invaluable contribution of community leaders, listen to their perspectives, and strengthen collaboration on issues that matter most to both the community and the environment.
Celebrating Partnerships That Create Lasting Impact
Opening the discussions, the Chairman of the Chonyi Council of Elders expressed his appreciation for the longstanding relationship between Vipingo Ridge and the surrounding villages.
He acknowledged the positive impact of Vipingo Ridge’s firewood donation programme, explaining that cooking fuel remains one of the greatest challenges for many households. By donating firewood generated through the removal of invasive tree species during habitat restoration, Vipingo Ridge not only supports ecosystem restoration but also helps families reduce household expenses. The savings can then be redirected towards other essential needs such as food, education, and healthcare.
The Chairman also recognized the employment opportunities created by Vipingo Ridge, confirming that young people from all neighboring villages have secured meaningful employment across the estate, providing a valuable source of income for many local families.
He further acknowledged the company's ongoing support towards facilitating the documentation required for the proposed Chodari Dispensary, a project that will improve access to healthcare services for Chodari and neighboring communities once completed.
Looking ahead, he encouraged Vipingo Ridge to continue investing in programmes that support school-going children, recognizing education as one of the most powerful tools for building resilient communities.
Education as a Shared Responsibility
The Deputy County Commissioner, Mr. Mohamed Yusuf supported by the Officer Commanding Station, Mr. Majani reinforced the importance of education as a foundation for community development.
He encouraged village elders to work closely with government agencies in addressing challenges that prevent children from accessing education, including drug abuse, criminal activity, and early pregnancies. By remaining vigilant and supporting families within their communities, local leaders can play a vital role in ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn and succeed.
Building Cleaner, Safer Communities
The Chairman of the Mtwapa Municipality, Mr. Chilumo shared updates on key infrastructure developments planned for Kilifi South, including improved waste management systems and the installation of street lighting to enhance public safety.
He urged community leaders to sensitize residents on protecting public infrastructure from vandalism and to promote responsible waste management practices by encouraging proper waste disposal and reporting cases of environmental non-compliance.
Inspiring a Shared Commitment to Conservation
Sharing the story of Vipingo Ridge's environmental journey, the Conservation Manager reflected on the remarkable transformation of the estate from a former sisal plantation into a thriving wildlife sanctuary.
Through years of habitat restoration, indigenous tree planting, wildlife reintroductions, and environmental management, the landscape has become a refuge for an increasing diversity of wildlife while creating lasting ecological value for the region.
Building on this success, he encouraged village elders to champion tree planting within their communities and to discourage unnecessary tree cutting, highlighting the important role healthy ecosystems play in supporting both biodiversity and local livelihoods.
The Conservation Manager also introduced Vipingo Ridge's Wildlife Conservation Education Programme, launched in January 2026. The programme welcomes schoolchildren into the sanctuary for guided game drives, nature walks, and conservation learning experiences designed to foster a lifelong appreciation for wildlife and the natural environment.
He also raised concern over reports of young people hunting birds for recreation, urging community leaders to help raise awareness that every species has an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Leaders were encouraged to promptly report incidents of poaching, wildlife deaths, or human-wildlife conflict to the nearest police station within 24 hours so that the relevant authorities and Vipingo Ridge can respond appropriately.
The Deputy County Commissioner echoed this call, encouraging community leaders to continue playing an active role in protecting the natural resources that sustain both people and wildlife.
Recognizing and Appreciating Community Leadership
The forum also provided an opportunity to recognize the dedication of village elders, many of whom have served their communities voluntarily for years.
The Deputy County Commissioner shared encouraging news that the Government has introduced a programme to provide monthly stipends to village elders and Nyumba Kumi representatives, acknowledging the important role they play in community leadership, security, and development.
The day concluded with an appreciation luncheon, sponsored by the Vipingo Ridge Management offering leaders, government representatives, and the Vipingo Ridge team an opportunity to continue conversations, strengthen relationships, and reaffirm their shared commitment to sustainable development.
