Vipingo Ridge Double Award Win at the Award MICE Awards

The future of Africa's MICE Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions industry is being shaped by a changing business events landscape. Delegates and organisations now want more than meeting rooms, conference facilities and accommodation: they want experiences. They want destinations that bring together business, leisure, culture, nature, sustainability, connectivity and hospitality in one seamless offering.

This was at the heart of the conversations at the Africa MICE Summit 2026, held from 1–2 October at the Tembo International Convention Centre in Mombasa. Under the theme "Building Africa's Business Events Ecosystem for Trade, Investment and Innovation," the two-day summit brought together industry professionals, destination marketers, hospitality leaders, investors, policymakers and event organisers to examine how Africa can strengthen its position in the global business events industry.

For Vipingo Ridge, taking part was a chance to showcase the destination, and also to listen, learn and engage with the conversations shaping the next generation of MICE. The summit carried particular significance because our Chief Executive Officer, Alex Horsey, joined an expert panel on "Africa's Next Incentive Travel Opportunity: Winning the Global Incentive Market."

Understanding the Opportunity in Incentive Travel

Unlike a conventional conference, an incentive programme is designed to reward, motivate and engage participants through experiences that create lasting memories. Africa has many of the ingredients incentive travellers look for, including wildlife and conservation, beaches, adventure, culture, cuisine, sport and distinctive hospitality. The opportunity lies in bringing these elements together into programmes that meet the expectations of international buyers.

The panel was moderated by Tes Proos, President of SITE Africa, and also included Nitin Sachdeva, Alma Martínez and Tasneem Adamji. It asked a central question: how can Africa turn its destinations and experiences into incentive programmes compelling enough to win global business? The discussion covered global incentive demand and the practical factors that decide whether interest becomes business: buyer expectations, accessibility, consistency of service, experience design and buyer confidence.

These points reflect a wider shift in the industry. It is no longer enough for a destination to have the physical capacity to host an event. Buyers need confidence that the entire experience, from the first enquiry to the departure of the last delegate, will be delivered professionally and consistently. For African destinations, that means investing in people, partnerships, connectivity, service standards and destination packaging as well as infrastructure.

The Challenges Facing Africa's MICE Industry

The summit reflected an industry with significant opportunity, and with challenges to address if Africa is to compete more effectively for international business events.

Accessibility and connectivity. International organisers care about how easily delegates can reach a destination. Flight connectivity, road infrastructure, transfers and the ease of moving between accommodation, venues and experiences all shape buyer confidence. For the coast, this is both an opportunity and a responsibility: the region must keep strengthening the links that let visitors move efficiently between business and leisure.

Consistency of service. A world-class venue can win an enquiry, but consistent service turns it into a successful event and a returning client. MICE programmes depend on tight schedules and many suppliers, and accommodation, food and beverage, technical support, transport, guest services and activities must all work together.

Designing experiences, not just events. Modern incentive programmes are built around experiences. The aim is to create moments delegates remember and talk about, beyond filling the time between meetings. Africa has a natural advantage here, but the challenge is packaging its assets into professionally designed programmes that adapt to different markets, group sizes and corporate objectives.

Building buyer confidence. Choosing an African destination is a significant decision for an international buyer. Confidence comes from evidence: successful past events, strong partnerships, professional teams, reliable infrastructure and sustainability credentials. This is why industry recognition, relationships and platforms such as the Africa MICE Summit matter.

Where Vipingo Ridge Fits

The conversations in Mombasa reinforced an approach that has been developing at the Ridge for some time: MICE should be about creating a complete destination experience, and hosting a meeting is only part of that.

On Kenya's North Coast, Vipingo Ridge combines conference facilities with accommodation, golf, wildlife, wellness, beach experiences, dining and outdoor activities. Business groups can move from the boardroom into an experience without leaving the destination. That suits the growing trend of "leisure," where business and leisure are combined in one trip. Mombasa was presented at the summit as a destination able to pair business with coastal experiences, culture and hospitality, and Vipingo Ridge extends that proposition by bringing many of those experiences together in one place.

The PGA-accredited Baobab Course offers a particular opportunity for golf groups and corporate incentive programmes. Together with the wildlife sanctuary, private beach facilities, accommodation and meeting and retreat spaces, it allows programmes to be designed around a group's interests instead of a single standard itinerary.

Sustainability as Part of the Proposition

The future of MICE is closely tied to sustainability. Organisations increasingly look at the environmental and social impact of their events, which favours destinations that can demonstrate responsible practice over those that simply make claims.

At Vipingo Ridge, sustainability is part of the destination itself. Wildlife conservation, environmental stewardship, resource efficiency and community engagement give groups a chance to see and take part in that work. This is especially relevant to incentive travel, where guests can enjoy the destination while connecting with its conservation and community initiatives. The 2026 Africa MICE Awards likewise recognised sustainability as one of the areas contributing to excellence in the industry, alongside innovation, economic impact, industry influence, scalability and inclusivity.

A Double Award Win

The summit culminated in the Africa MICE Awards, where Vipingo Ridge received two recognitions:

  • Africa's Best Green / Sustainable MICE Venue

  • Kenya's Best Emerging MICE Property

The two awards recognise complementary sides of our MICE journey. The first recognises our sustainability-led approach and strengthens our position with organisations and planners who want sustainability built into the experience. The second recognises our growing presence in Kenya's business events sector. Together they give external validation to a proposition we have been building, and a platform to keep developing it.

More Than a Meeting

At Vipingo Ridge, a corporate programme can extend well beyond the boardroom. Groups can combine meetings with golf on the Baobab Course, team-building, wellness, outdoor adventure, wildlife encounters and curated dining. Incentive programmes can draw on the natural environment and conservation work, and leadership retreats give teams a chance to step out of the office and reconnect in a different setting.

Our offering is designed to combine the practical needs of a business event with the experiences that make the destination distinctive. Conferences, retreats, golf days, incentive trips and private events can all be hosted without moving between multiple destinations, with a smooth, personalised experience from planning through to the final delegate's departure.

Successful events also depend on collaboration. Platforms like the Africa MICE Summit connect us with planners, corporate buyers, destination partners and industry professionals, and give Vipingo Ridge a voice in the conversations shaping business events across the continent.

Looking Ahead

The African MICE Summit showed that the conversation around Africa's business events industry is moving beyond attracting conferences for delegate numbers alone. The focus is increasingly on value, experience, investment, innovation, sustainability and long-term impact. For the Kenya Coast, this is a chance to position itself as a place where business and experience exist together, and not only as somewhere meetings can be held.

For Vipingo Ridge, that future aligns closely with what we already offer. A conference can become a golf experience. A leadership retreat can become a chance to reconnect with nature. An incentive programme can combine business, wildlife, wellness, dining and the coast. A corporate gathering can create value beyond the event itself.

As Africa competes for a greater share of the global incentive and business events market, the opportunity is to turn the continent's natural, cultural and hospitality assets into professionally delivered experiences for an increasingly sophisticated buyer. The future of MICE will not be defined by the meeting room alone. It will be defined by what delegates experience before, during and after the meeting, and what they remember when they return home. For Vipingo Ridge, that is where the opportunity lies.
