Golf, Beach and Safari: Kenya's bold vision for Golf Tourism
Kenya Tourism Board Takes the Lead in Reviving Golf Tourism Sector
Kenya’s golf tourism is set for an exciting revival, thanks to a bold new initiative launched by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) to position the country as Africa’s premier golfing destination. The Kenya Tourism Board has announced a new push to grow golf tourism and make Kenya a top global golf destination. KTB plans to achieve this through partnerships, better infrastructure, and focused marketing.
Our Resort Manager, David Marsh, was among industry leaders who attended, and spoke, at the KTB stakeholder breakfast meeting, attended by over 70 guests.
KTB officials emphasised the huge potential of golf tourism to diversify Kenya’s visitor experiences, attract high-spending tourists, and boost the local economy. As part of this strategic push, Vipingo Ridge — home to Africa’s only PGA-accredited championship golf course — has been highlighted as a key attraction for both local and international golf travellers.
Golf Tourism Industry
Golf tourists spend an average of $3,200 per trip, which is three times more than regular leisure tourists. At a recent Golf Tourism Stakeholders’ Forum in Nairobi, KTB Chairman Francis Gichaba said Kenya’s golf courses and rising international interest are key strengths.
KTB CEO June Chepkemei says Kenya needs to offer unique golf experiences by mixing golf with safaris, beach visits, and local culture.
She said big events like the Magical Kenya Open help, but the aim is to attract golfers all year.
She also wants golf tourism to be more inclusive, with options for women, young people, and families. Going digital, caring for the environment, and helping local communities are also key to success. Chepkemei added that working with other East African countries — like through the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing — can help promote the region together.
Kenya’s title as Africa’s Best Golf Destination in the 2020 World Golf Awards shows there’s huge potential to grow even more.
Golf tourism represents one of the most profitable segments in global travel, with tourists spending two to three times more than regular visitors and staying longer.
Kenya’s participation in the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) in Lisbon, Portugal has already generated significant interest, particularly from golf travellers in Germany, Portugal, and the UK. The country’s diverse offerings, from highland courses to coastal greens—set it apart from competitors like South Africa and Morocco. Vipingo Ridge also attended the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) event in Spain, meeting 36 international tour operators interested in Kenya as a golf tourism destination.
Kenya: Africa’s Best Golf Destination
In an ambitious bid to become Africa’s premier golf tourism destination, Kenya is leveraging its world-class golf courses, spectacular wildlife, and pristine beaches to attract high- spending international travellers.
With over 40 golf courses in the Kenya, year round golfing weather and high profile courses such as Vipingo Ridge, KTB will position Kenya as a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts.
Through this campaign, KTB aims to showcase the very best of Kenya’s golf offering: world-class courses set against stunning backdrops, complemented by unforgettable safari, beach, and cultural experiences.
