Stepping up to support Drought Relief

In an era where community spirit is more valuable than ever, Vipingo Ridge once again demonstrated that it is more than the premier residential and hospitality destination on Kenya’s coast; it is a community deeply committed to compassion, responsibility, and meaningful impact.

The significance of this donation becomes even clearer against the backdrop of the severe drought conditions currently affecting Kilifi County.

Responding to a Growing Humanitarian Need

Following the failed rains in November 2025, leading to a drought, a structured emergency response initiative was launched through a coordinated effort involving the Kilifi County Government, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), and the Kenya Red Cross.

There was a call to action to activate public, private partnerships in the County and for organisations to support our communities due to the impact of the drought. Current reports indicate that approximately 245,500 people representing 40,925 households have been affected by the worsening drought conditions across the county. Communities such as Ganze continue to face severe food insecurity as crops fail, animals have perished, water sources dry up, and many families struggle to access daily meals.

It is in moments such as these that solidarity matters most. At Vipingo Ridge, we believe that when our neighbours are in need, we must rise together in support.

On the evening of Tuesday, 20th May 2025, Vipingo Ridge hosted a food aid handover ceremony, highlighting our continued commitment to the people of Kilifi County. The occasion saw the formal presentation of a substantial food aid donation to the Kilifi County Government support that will reach thousands of families affected by the ongoing drought crisis, particularly in the hard-hit sub-county of Ganze.

The Official Handover

The handover was presided over by our Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alex Horsey, who formally presented the donation on behalf of Vipingo Ridge. His participation reflected the values at the heart of our institution that this contribution was not simply an act of giving, but a gesture of genuine partnership and shared humanity.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Kilifi County Government was Mr. Collins Mwahendo, Director for Special Programs and Disaster Management. His department plays a critical role in coordinating emergency response efforts across the county, including drought mitigation, disaster preparedness, and relief coordination.

Also present during the handover were members of the Vipingo Ridge leadership and administration team. Their presence underscored the collective commitment of the Vipingo Ridge team to responsible corporate citizenship and community wellbeing.

The Numbers Behind the Generosity

The food aid package assembled for Kilifi County represents the combined generosity of our team, homeowners, and donors. Below is a summary of the items that made up this meaningful contribution. The food donation consisted of 1188 kg of maize flour, 204 kg of rice, 204 kg of beans, and 102 litres of cooking oil.

This led to 102 ‘packs’ each containing 10kg of maize flour, 2kg of rice, 2kg of beans, 1liter of cooking oil and an addition of 7 bales of maize flour.

While these numbers reflect quantities, their true value lies in the lives they will touch. These provisions represent thousands of meals for families facing uncertainty and hardship. They represent hope, dignity, and relief for communities navigating one of the most difficult periods in recent memory.

This initiative was made possible through the dedication, teamwork, and generosity of many individuals and departments across the Vipingo Ridge stakeholder community.

Our Organising Team

Special recognition goes to our Executive Office to Mary Mwaniki, whose leadership and coordination were instrumental in ensuring the success of the initiative. From overseeing collection efforts to coordinating logistics and timelines, the organising team worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth execution of the handover process.

Our Security Department

We extend heartfelt appreciation to the Security Department for their critical role in packaging, sorting, and organising the food donations. Their professionalism and commitment ensured that every item was carefully prepared and ready for distribution.

Though much of their work happened behind the scenes, it was central to the success of this initiative.

Our Procurement Team

Our sincere thanks also go to the Procurement Team for efficiently sourcing and coordinating the required food supplies under time-sensitive conditions. Their expertise and dedication ensured the delivery of quality food items that will directly support affected households.

Advancing Our Commitments

This initiative forms part of Vipingo Ridge’s broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitment.

Our approach to ESG is rooted in meaningful, long-term engagement with the communities around us. We recognise that the wellbeing of Vipingo Ridge is intrinsically connected to the wellbeing of Kilifi County and its people.

Through partnerships with the Kilifi County Government, the NDMA, the Kenya Red Cross, and other stakeholders, we remain committed to supporting resilience, dignity, and sustainable development within our surrounding communities.

As the drought crisis has deepened in the first half of 2026, we recognised the urgent need for collective action. We heard the call and we responded.

Looking ahead

As this food aid reaches households across the county, we are reminded that true community is defined not only by shared success, but also by how we stand together during times of hardship.

Vipingo Ridge is proud to play its part in supporting the people of Kilifi County during this critical time, and we remain committed to building lasting partnerships that create meaningful impact beyond our gates.

We look forward to continued collaboration with the Kilifi County Government, the NDMA, the Kenya Red Cross, and all stakeholders working tirelessly to support vulnerable communities across the region.

Together, we continue creating opportunities and building a true space to thrive for all.
