World Ocean Day: Celebrating Sustainability and Creativity
The scenic shores of Vipingo Ridge Beach Club came alive on Sunday 8th June as we hosted World Ocean Day. The event, marked by a strong showing of environmental commitment and community spirit, was graced by the presence of the Deputy Governor of Kilifi County HE Flora Chibule, underscoring the local government’s dedication to marine conservation.
It was also the climax of the REO festivals (Reef Day, Environmental Day and Ocean Day).
Kilifi Deputy Governor Opens World Ocean Day Artisan Showcase
The day commenced with an exhibition tour led by the Deputy Governor of Kilifi County, where a variety of ecofriendly innovations, handcrafted artworks, and sustainable products were showcased. From intricate crochet pieces to paint art and recyclable crafts, the exhibits reflected the rich creativity and environmental consciousness of the community.
Following the exhibition, opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Isaac Mwabonje, CEO of Kilifi Innovation Hub, who emphasized the importance of grassroots efforts in tackling ocean-related challenges. Mr. Alex Horsey, CEO of Vipingo Ridge Ltd, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental conservation and community partnerships. He highlighted Vipingo Ridge’s recent Gold certifications from TRA and Ecotourism Kenya as a testament to its sustainable tourism efforts. He also called on the County Government and partners to support local youth in advancing regional sustainability.
Generative Fashion Show
A defining moment unfolded as designers transformed sustainability into style. The regenerative fashion show dazzled attendees with collections crafted entirely from upcycled textiles and earth conscious materials proving eco innovation.
Local models took a turn on the catwalk to showcase the designs to the gathered crowds.
Stakeholder Spotlight
The stakeholder speeches highlighted Kilifi’s integrated approach to marine conservation. The Kilifi County Government was represented by the Deputy Governor, The Director-Partnerships and The Chief Officer - ICT Department. Economic enablers like The Kingdom Bank were represented by the Manager, Mtwapa Branch who highlighted their commitment to financial assistance for sustainable ventures. Community anchors including Swahili Pot, Kibibi Touch, Gapeka Children Home Care, and a song artist “Mwenye Mudzi” amplified grassroots mobilization in promoting locally made designs and artworks and sensitizing the community on sustainable resource use. Innovation drivers such as Kilifi Innovation Hub and Sustainability implementers like eco-world Recycling demonstrated circular economy models.
Deputy Governor’s Address
The keynote address was delivered by the Deputy Governor, who spoke passionately about the need to protect Kilifi’s coastal and marine ecosystems. she promised her full support for youth led sustainability efforts and plans to initiate a funding program that would support young people’s creative ideas, also encouraging the promotion of locally made products and proposed that this celebration become an annual event to monitor growth and impact.
She also encouraged skill oriented short courses be introduced in vocational training centers after being impressed by the creative art work from the exhibitors.
Crowning of Miss Mazingira 2025
The ceremony reached its pinnacle with the Deputy Governor conferring the title of Miss Mazingira 2025 upon a distinguished young environmental advocate. This prestigious title reflects Kilifi County’s unwavering commitment to empowering youth leadership in sustainability and conservation efforts. Contestants were judged based on four key criteria: environmental knowledge, public speaking, community involvement, and creativity in promoting eco-friendly initiatives. The winning contestant emphasized inclusive environmental education, community tree-planting drives, and youth engagement as cornerstones of lasting ecological impact.
Cake Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate Vipingo Ridge Gold Certifications
The event concluded with a ceremonial cake cutting, formally commemorating the recent Vipingo Ridge Gold certification by Ecotourism Kenya and the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) Gold Accreditation. This accreditation acknowledges the resort’s exemplary adherence to sustainable tourism standards and ongoing dedication to environmental stewardship within Kenya’s coastal region.
Vipingo Ridge remains committed to promoting environmental sustainability and engaging in initiatives that protect and preserve the natural environment. World Ocean Day 2025 served as a strong reminder of the power of unity, creativity, and action in building a more sustainable future.
