Engaging plastic waste education: World Environment Day

Vipingo Ridge Marks World Environment Day with Community Clean-Up, Stakeholder Engagement and Waste Segregation Training

On Thursday 5th June 2025 Vipingo Ridge participated in the World Environment Day.

The global theme ‘Putting an End to Plastic Pollution’ inspired two activities on the day, looking within, through a team training event, and engaging with our partners for a community-led event in Kilifi Town.

Kilifi Town Waste Sensitisation and Clean up Event

Our team joined a community event held in Kilifi Town as part of the REO (Reef Day, Environmental Day, and Ocean Day) Festivals.

The event, centered around the international theme, ‘Putting an End to Plastic Pollution’, brought together stakeholders, and community residents together with the county government of Kilifi County in a shared commitment to environmental conservation.

The day began with a community clean up exercise, which started at our local Naivas Shopping Centre and moved through the Kilifi Town Central Business District (CBD). The initiative, aimed at raising awareness on proper waste disposal and environmental responsibility, and saw participation from various groups including our team from Vipingo Ridge.

We proudly joined hands with other stakeholders, contributing our time and effort to help restore cleanliness and promote civic responsibility in the town.

Gracing the main event was the Deputy Governor of Kilifi County H.E Flora Chibule, who emphasized the critical need for plastic segregation.

In her remarks, she called on stakeholders to support our County’s efforts by working closely with local authorities to develop sustainable waste management systems. Her address served as a reminder that environmental change requires both community action and institutional support.

One of the most heartfelt moments of the event came from Lulu, a schoolgirl from Korosho Primary School, whose passionate poem about environmental conservation moved the audience. Her powerful words and delivery left a lasting impression on many, showing that even the youngest voices can ignite change.

Vipingo Ridge Team Waste Management Sensitisation Training

Meanwhile, back at Vipingo Ridge, the momentum for environmental preservation continued.

A hands on training session on waste segregation was held at the Sundowner. This waste management sensitisation is an important part of our commitment as a Eco-tourism rated establishment, and is part of an ongoing training programme.

At the session the team were refreshed to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) compliant color coded system for waste bins:

  • Green for biogradeble/organic

  • Black for general/none recyclable

  • Blue for recyclable

  • Red for hazardous

The session included live demonstrations on how to properly sort different types of waste, making the training practical and relatable. In addition, the team were taken through waste management laws and guidelines to ensure compliance with NEMA standards.

The session concluded with an open question-and-answer forum, where staff from different departments raised specific concerns and sought clarifications on procedures relating to waste handling and segregation.

The clarity of the team on waste management is critical to reducing land fill and minimising waste produced at Vipingo Ridge.

These combined efforts community involvement, leadership engagement, and capacity building highlight Vipingo Ridge’s continued commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

As we reflect on the success of World Environment Day, we remain steadfast in our mission to contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Kilifi County and beyond.
