Premier events venue Vipingo Ridge Beach Club hosts media launch for Canon and Oceans Alive

Canon Central & North Africa (CCNA) has partnered with the Kenyan non-profit Oceans Alive on a coral reef restoration project in Kuruwitu, Kenya, as part of its global "World Unseen" initiative.

The official media launch, held at the Vipingo Ridge Beach Terrace, centered on the critical message “no coral, no fish,” highlighting the indispensable role of healthy reefs for fish breeding and coastal livelihoods.

The event was attended by key leaders including Somesh Adukia, Managing Director for Canon CCNA; Des Bowden, Director/CEO of Oceans Alive; and Tilda Bowden, Director/Education Development Manager, and garnered significant attention from national and international media houses, including Standard GroupRoyal Media Services, and DW (Deutsche Welle). The partnership leverages Canon's imaging technology to document and raise awareness for this vital, community-led marine conservation.

World Unseen Project Overview

The initiative focuses on the Kuruwitu Co-Managed Area, a community-led marine protected area in Kilifi County. The goal is to highlight the importance of coral reefs for coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods through powerful visual storytelling, directly supporting the mission captured by the tagline "no coral, no fish."

Canon is providing imaging equipment, such as cameras with underwater housing, to help scientists and community members accurately monitor and document coral growth and the subsequent return of marine biodiversity.

The first photographic exhbition is now on display at the Vipingo Ridge Beach Club. The event this week was an opportunity for the Kenyan media to experience first hand the powerful imagery, and an exciting new film:

Community-Led Conservation

Emphasizing a grassroots approach, Oceans Alive works directly with local groups like the Kuruwitu Beach Management Unit (KBMU). Together, they implement sustainable marine resource management and restoration techniques like coral gardening, actions that are fundamental to securing the future of local fisheries.
